From January 8 to January 12, 2020, the Institute for Accessibility Development, Tsinghua University (hereinafter referred to as "Institute") was invited by the University of Tokyo to attend the Inclusive Design Laboratory Project: Kickoff Symposium. Experts and scholars from the University of Tokyo, Kanagawa University of Human Service, Kyushu Institute of Technology, National Rehabilitation Center for Persons with Disabilities, the University of California, Berkeley, Amazon, National Association of Upper Secondary School Principals, Technical University of Munich, and University of Colorado attended the symposium. They spoke and shared their ideas on the nature of diversity and inclusion in space environment, universal design and accessible environment, industry university research and international cooperation, laws and services with participants. Combining with the CripTech Symposium held in 2018 in Berkeley, USA, this indicates the formation of the partnership between Tsinghua University, the University of Tokyo and the University of California, Berkeley, committing to promoting accessibility and ensuring that individuals have equitable access to services and facilities.
At the meeting, Ryohei Kanzaki, Director of Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology of the University of Tokyo, made an opening speech. On behalf of the center, he welcomed all the participants to attend the symposium, introduced the center’s vision, goals, research directions and strategic plan, and announced the establishment of the inclusive design lab. Shin-ichiro Kumagaya, who is responsible for the project on Inclusive Design Laboratory, talked about the project in details. Shao Lei, Executive Director of the Institute, made a keynote speech on Challenges and Opportunities to Promote the Universal Accessibility and Social Inclusion in China. Based on the current social characteristics in China. He analyzed the existing national policies, urban development, population structure, and accessibility awareness and identified the challenges and opportunities for the accessibility development in China, which deepened the relationship between the two universities and promoted international exchanges and cooperation.
